No Escape

There is no chance of pardon.  No chance of escape. I know this.

Of course, when a group of prisoners foist break plans, they call me in. I'm their elder. They want my approval. None of the plans are workable, and the final outcome usually proves me right.

Chess, I've learned to play well. With each match, I've learned to slow my moves, deliberate my options carefully.

In my early years, there was only one answer, and only one course of action. Always checkmate. I make the final move, and get bored with the game.

And reading, I have done a great deal of reading and studying. I'm sure I could discuss any topic with you.

But I've lost a great deal. I sleep at night and sleep deeply. But I do not dream anymore. Not even my old nightmares.
